Frequently asked questions about polyurea pools
How thick is the polyurea layer in a pool and how much material is applied?
The membrane has a final thickness of at least 2 millimetres, roughly 2 kilos per square metre, sprayed in one continuous layer without seams. Underneath sits a bonding primer suitable for permanent immersion, applied in two coats totalling about 500 grams per square metre, which doubles as a vapour barrier. On top comes the UV and wear layer, two roller coats totalling around 400 grams per square metre.
Why is a separate topcoat needed on top of the membrane?
Because the membrane stops the water but is not the layer built for permanent immersion and fierce sunlight. The UV and wear layer is the only layer that can stand permanently under water, it absorbs the wear and it carries the pigment, so your colour sits in that coat. UV colour stability is guaranteed for five years and the waterproofing of the system for ten.
How soon can the pool be filled again after the system is applied?
After seven days. That is how long the topcoat needs to cure fully, and filling earlier loads a layer that has not reached its strength. Polyurea itself reacts within seconds and is quickly walkable again, so the waiting time is set entirely by the topcoat. Do fill the pool promptly after that, since standing empty for long is not good for the shell, and keep the water balanced from the first fill.
What does the guarantee certificate state and does the guarantee transfer if I sell the house?
The certificate states the handover date, the surface area, the system applied, the colour, the guarantee terms and the maintenance instructions. The terms run from the handover date: ten years on watertightness, ten years on adhesion, five years on UV colour stability and three years on finishing details. If you sell the property within that period, the remaining guarantee passes to the new owner, provided this is reported in writing within 30 days of the transfer of ownership.
